We accept submissions between the 1st and the 10th of every month.

Note we will not consider requests to fund an individual's medical needs, rent, utilities, home repairs, car trouble, appliances, etc.

Launched in April 2017, Awesome Disability is an independent chapter of the Awesome Foundation, a global community that provides micro-grants with no strings attached. The trustees of Awesome Disability are people with disabilities that want to support ideas and projects in our community.

Featured in Rooted in Rights and Diversability.

How it works

  • 10-ish Trustees (on average) each contribute $100 per month.

  • People with awesome ideas submit an application for the grant. Please submit your application in English.

  • The trustees review and discuss the applications, and pick one.

  • The recipient is given $1000, no strings attached.

  • The process is repeated every month, in order to spread the awesomeness.

We accept submissions for the month's grant between the 1st through the 10th of the current month. We will not consider applications submitted outside of this window. Decisions are made by the end of the month.

We select one recipient for the monthly grant.

Eligibility & Frequently Asked Questions
We award $1,000 grants to support awesome projects that benefit disabled people. We prioritize projects led by disabled people and welcome applications from individuals, nonprofits, and companies around the world.

We believe disabled people should have a meaningful role in shaping projects that affect their lives. We also recognize that impactful disability-related work can be led by nondisabled people when disabled people are meaningfully involved in leadership and decision-making.

Who can apply?
Anyone can apply, including individuals, nonprofit organizations, and companies. We accept applications from anywhere in the world, and applications must be submitted in English.

You do not need to identify as disabled to apply. However, we prioritize projects led by disabled people that benefit other disabled people.

Do I need to be disabled to apply?
No. We welcome applications from disabled and nondisabled applicants.

Our priority is projects led by disabled people and designed to benefit disabled people. We have also considered projects led by nondisabled people when disabled people have meaningful roles in the project's leadership and decision-making.

If you are a nondisabled applicant, please explain your role in the project, how it benefits disabled people, and how disabled people are involved in shaping, leading, and making decisions about the work.

We encourage genuine collaboration and shared decision-making, rather than simply involving disabled people as participants or beneficiaries without a voice in the project.

What makes a project eligible?
Your project should have a meaningful connection to disability and benefit disabled people. We welcome applicants to define disability as they see fit.

Projects can take many forms, including those focused on accessibility, arts and culture, technology, community building, inclusion, advocacy, or other areas that benefit disabled people.

We encourage you to review our previously funded projects to understand the range of ideas we've supported. When preparing your application, explain the project's goals, who it benefits, who leads it, and how disabled people are involved in decision-making.

Does my organization need to be a registered nonprofit?
No. We accept applications from individuals, nonprofits, and companies. You do not need to apply through a registered nonprofit organization.

Regardless of your organizational status, your application should clearly describe the project, its benefit to disabled people, and how you would use the $1,000 grant.

Can I apply if I'm outside the United States?
Yes! We accept applications from anywhere in the world. Applications must be submitted in English and during the monthly application window.

What can the grant fund?
Our $1,000 grants support projects that benefit disabled people. In your application, explain what you want to accomplish and how the funding would help make it possible.

We do not fund requests for an individual's medical needs, rent, utilities, home repairs, car trouble, appliances, or similar personal expenses.

If you have questions about a particular expense, please describe it in your application. We cannot pre-approve individual budgets or expenses by email.

Can I ask the trustees whether my idea is eligible before applying?
Unfortunately, we cannot individually assess project ideas, pre-screen applications, or advise applicants on how to develop their proposals by email.

We receive a high volume of inquiries and are unable to provide individual eligibility determinations in advance. Please review this FAQ and our previously funded projects. If you believe your project aligns with our mission, we encourage you to apply.

When can I apply?
Applications are accepted from the 1st through the 10th of each month.

Apply through our online application: http://disability.awesomefoundation.org.

We do not accept applications by email or consider submissions outside the application window.

When will the grant recipient be announced?
We generally announce the selected project around the beginning of the following month through our newsletter: http://awesomedisability.substack.com.

You can also follow us on X: http://twitter.com/Awesome_Dis.

Will I receive feedback if my application is unsuccessful?
Due to the volume of applications we receive, we cannot provide individual feedback on applications.

Does meeting the eligibility criteria guarantee a grant?
No. Meeting the general eligibility criteria does not guarantee funding. We prioritize projects led by disabled people that benefit disabled people, and we consider other projects where disabled people have meaningful leadership and decision-making roles.

All applications are considered through our regular review process.

Still have questions?

Because of the volume of inquiries we receive, we cannot respond individually to eligibility questions or pre-screen projects by email. We encourage you to review this FAQ and our previously funded projects, then submit an application if your project aligns with our mission.

We look forward to seeing what you create!
