Chainbreaker Collective is a membership-based and membership-led economic and environmental justice organization. Our mission is to expand access to affordable transportation and support economically and environmentally sustainable communities for low-income people in Santa Fe, NM. Since 2004, we have been committed to providing refurbished bikes and teaching mechanic skills to people without access to transportation through our flagship program The Bicycle Resource Center. This is a hands-on bicycle workshop where Chainbreaker members who have gone through one of our training programs help others get a used bike and/or learn how to repair and tune it up.
Today Chainbreaker has over 700 dues-paying members, and each year we host a Posolada, a free community event where we celebrate the victories and accomplishments of the year with food and fun for the whole family! The event is hosted in December, right before the holidays. As part of the festivities, we give away various sizes of children and youth bicycles to families with children who would otherwise be unable to afford one.
Funds from the Awesome Foundation will go towards purchasing ten kids bicycles in four different sizes, as well as helmets. We plan to give away at least twenty bicycles, the rest of which will be sought out through donations. The event will be held Sunday, December 8, 2019.
