Training newer square dance callers

We are an active organization started in 1954 in Ontario to preserve and promote the traditional Canadian style of square and couple dancing. All our board members are volunteers and all our callers are volunteers. We all enjoy being physically active by dancing; no dancing experience necessary, just a desire to move and have fun!

Square dancing in the past was a male/female couples' activities. It has evolved to include dancing by position left or right rather than by male or female gender. Square dance moves can be done to any style of music and many dances/classes are a mix of traditional fiddle tunes and modern pop music. We have classes at community and seniors' centres throughout Ontario.

Many of our square dance callers are senior citizens; the Awesome Foundation funding will be used to pay fees to Caller Lab to train our younger callers, covering travel costs of younger callers to attend Caller Lab training sessions and purchasing training materials for younger callers to use. This will give incentives to younger callers to join or to enhance their skills. From time to time, funds permitting a token honorarium is given to a caller.
