DISLOYAL (PEC/DIY/SK8)

DISLOYAL (PEC/DIY/SK8) will engage teenagers from the County in a 2 day skateboard making workshop led by an experienced teenager Youth Leader from Toronto supported by an expert skateboard designer/street artist Mentor Teacher. Participants will not only learn from a peer in their age group and take away a hand-made Canadian Maple skateboard (made using the Roarockit vacuum press prototyping method) with their very own custom personalized graphics ready to ride at the local skatepark, but the youth will also develop transferable creative and entrepreneurial skills to continue to make their own local boards with their friends.

Canadian youth are primarily targeted and marketed to as passive consumers of professional, mostly American, skateboard brands: DISLOYAL will be a catalyst to support an emerging local do-it-yourself skateboard culture in the County by mentoring local youth to be active producers of their own culture.

DISLOYAL will be an ongoing youth mentoring outreach project and new PEC based skateboard brand presented and supported by HOOKY, which is a new professional skateboard company and design studio being launched in the fall by designer Craig Morrison (who is the founding teacher of the award-winning Oasis Skateboard Factory, a Toronto based alternative school design program and social enterprise for at-risk youth: http://oasisskateboardfactory.blogspot.com).
