Vel's Purple Oasis is an urban farm/garden created in 2008. It is located in the heart of Fairfax and University Circle. The farm has seen changes each year allowing it to expand its impact and commuty outreach.
Hydroponic farming would enhance the Purple Oasis's urban farming activity in numerous ways. It would utilize vertical space, allowing it to optimize the total space usage o the growing area. Hydroponic farming utilizes rich water rather than soil. Each plant would be suspended in waste, in addition, supported by a substrta medium. Plants would receive energy from LED lighting that is tailored specifically to the eneergy needs of the plants. It also allows us to grown year round. It also proivdes community training and workshops that would promote healthy living. Promoting heathy living would hep combat high rates of diabetes, and preventable chronic diseases within low income areas. The Oasis is located in a low income food dessert.
