Free Children's Books for Reluctant Readers

We are the South Sound Reading Foundation, a small non-profit that provides free books and story times for low-income children and families in five different counties. Teachers often contact us when they have a reluctant reader who could use a little extra help. Generally these children are living in poverty or don't get a lot of attention from adults at home. We find out what the child is interested in and provide the teacher with several books to fit the student's reading level and favorite subjects. The teacher then hands out these books to the student over the course of the school year. Helping a reluctant reader become a competent or even avid reader helps that student become more successful in school and life. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, two thirds of all students who cannot read proficiently by the end of 4th grade will end up in jail or on welfare. It is our mission to help children discover the magic and wonder of reading.
