Open Caption Finder
Open Caption Finder (OCF) is a free web and mobile app that helps deaf and hard of hearing audiences find open caption movie showtimes across the US. Open captions (OC) are burned into the screen and visible to everyone, unlike closed captions, which require a theater-provided device that often doesn’t work or isn’t available, if offered at all.
I’m deaf, and I co-founded OCF because I was tired of not being able to follow movies. Caption devices can be unreliable, and OC is great but often is not marked consistently on theater websites, forcing me to do 30+ minutes of research to figure out which screening to go to. OCF solves that by aggregating OC showtimes from ~4,000 US theaters in one place, across the next seven days.
We launched in early 2026. Since then we’ve grown to cover thousands of theaters nationwide, with users searching from all 50 states. The app is free and will stay that way; I don’t believe in charging users as this is meant to be an accessibility tool for the community.
Our goal is to become the primary resource that theatergoers use to find OC screenings. We also track where OC is and isn't available, so our goal is also to become the primary resource that film festivals, theater chains, and accessibility advocates turn to when they want to understand OC access.
OCF is run by me and my partner Caz. We’re a two-person team, bootstrapped, with no outside funding beyond small grants and sponsorships. Every dollar goes directly to keeping the app running and expanding our reach.
What our grantee is saying: Receiving this grant from Awesome Disability means the world. Caz and I run Open Caption Finder entirely on our own, so these funds will help us ensure that we can keep the service free for our users as we continue to grow and reach more deaf and hard of hearing moviegoers.
