Seaford Wetlands Community Garden has partnered with Seaford Secondary College to engage a group of students identified by teachers as disengaged from the classroom learning environment. We also have a small group of students from the Seaford Independent Learning Centre, students who have been expelled from schools in the area. Beginning with an hour a week this term (term one 2026) the program will expand to 3 sessions a week in term 2 with a total of 24 students.
Through getting outdoors into the natural environment while getting their hands dirty and growing their own food, we believe students will learn new skills, build confidence and develop social connections as they work together on shared tasks.
Students from each of the two schools will be supported by a teacher and SWCG volunteers. They will have their own raised bed to engage in all aspects of growing, planting, caring and harvesting. These students will also have opportunities to learn about growing from seed, worm farms, native gardens and growing fruit and nuts.
