Bonne Maman Burlesque

Sure! This is a new burlesque troupe featuring mothers — all the performers are moms, the show is made for moms, and each burlesque number is a satirical commentary on issues that real-life moms can relate to. Some examples of the numbers/themes: A mom stripping down from a business suit into a “mom outfit” (like yoga clothes), then again into lingerie, symbolizing the second shift of the working mom. In another number a mom furiously works on stage to both perform the striptease while also finishing up domestic tasks, to the sound of “I’m a Woman” by Peggy Lee, all while her husband (played by a drag king) sits on a toilet scrolling his phone, highlighting the domestic inequities present for so many modern Mothers. And there are sooo many other ideas! We are a group of currently four moms and we have a lot of fantastic and real AF concepts— we want the show to be true to the roots of burlesque, a blue collar art form that was designed as a playful satire on the themes of modern life. We think this is the perfect moment in time to create a show that is validating, subversive, political and powerful, all constructed for the female gaze.

The goal of this show, called Bonne Maman Burlesque (“good mom” in French), is to bring women together in community that we so desperately need, and to make them feel seen and understood in all of the banality, the rage, and the absurdity of the modern mom experience. It’s also an opportunity to help other women reconnect to their sexuality as they watch other women with real mom curves celebrating their bodies onstage unapologetically.

Our goal is to produce the show and perform the same show at several different venues throughout the Bay Area.
