Ballenarca is a life size, glowing whale puppet touring as a mobile stage and giant interactive sculpture. This portable puppet experience was created by a team of ten artists, using mostly salvaged materials.
The 30-foot long female sperm whale has been designed as the ultimate puppet, with all parts of her body mechanically operational. Her massive head opens up with a bicycle-powered pulley system, to reveal her moveable tongue and teeth. She swallows underwater creatures and children allowing them into her majestic inner-lit belly. Inside you see the large metal springs that open and close by a hand pulley and act as the atmospheric sound to her movements.
The show consists of homemade instruments, dance, and an assortment of transformational puppets that all build up the environment and narrative surrounding Ballenarca and her travels. She will continue to be a very active member of the Austin community, delivering free shows for everyone.
