Juneteenth Celebration at Historic Richmond Town

Black history and storytelling come together at Historic Richmond Town’s 2024 Juneteenth Celebration on Sunday, June 16, 2024. The event will feature a reenactment of the reading of General Orders No. 3 in Galveston, Texas on June 19th, 1865; the event that inspired the celebrations of emancipation that are now part of the fabric of a national holiday and commemorations. The reenactment will be performed by the Staten Island Juneteenth Freedom Players, a community group of actors, dancers, and creators who have toured the production across the borough since 2021. Additional interpretive dance and biographical performances throughout the day capture the jubilation of emancipation of enslaved people, and the story of Jim Crow, segregation and Civil Rights.

Thanks to funding from Awesome NYC, this year's Juneteenth Celebration promises to be especially memorable, particularly in light of significant budget cuts to the NYC cultural sector that have deeply affected the organization. The funding provided by Awesome NYC helps to remunerate the many actors, dancers, choreographers, and technical staff who make this incredible celebration possible.
