Star of the Sea Foundation - SOS /COVID-19 Support

OUR IMPACT
With over half of Monroe County residents struggling with the cost of living and lack of affordable housing, the SOS Foundation steps in to ensure that all families or individuals have the food support they need so they can concentrate on other aspects of life that will help them reach their goal of lifting out of poverty.
SOS in 2018 has distributed over 2 million pounds of food to the working poor throughout Monroe County. Allowing our clients to have the supplemental nutrition they need at no cost, so they can afford their rent, bills, or any other expenditures, resulting in growth to our local economy.

Services at the Food Pantry

FOOD:
The Mission stocks a variety of foods that represent a well-balanced diet and specific foods for persons who require special diets.

CLOTHING & HOUSEHOLD ITEMS:

All day long, generous individuals and businesses drop off bags of donated, serviceable clothing and household items. These items are then carefully sorted by volunteers, with the clothing washed if necessary, and then hung on racks and made available to those in need. Thousands of items per week are distributed this way.

REFERRALS:
The Star of the Sea Outreach Mission also provides referral services. We maintain an extensive list of other organizations and agencies who provide social services and assistance for people with special needs.

OTHER SERVICES:
The Star of the Sea Mission provides access to apply for Food Stamps, Temporary Cash Assistance, Medicaid and other services as are needed and appropriate. We have collected and redistributed over 40 tons of clothing, furniture, bed linens, and other household items donated by individuals, local businesses, and the U.S. Navy, in our first four years of operation.
