Tell us about an Awesome and Amazing Woman. Our Amazing Women's Edition (AWE) project allows students in underserved areas of Philadelphia to engage with multicultural heroines and to then write and illustrate books on those heroines. The project was developed in response to the fact that 70% of children's biographies are about men. For the proposed project, the students will be writing about the first woman to record a hip hop song, Lady B. After her recording career, she became the first DJ outside of New York to play hip hop on the radio. We plan to ask Will Smith to write the introduction for this picture book. Student projects are presented at a special book launch event, as well as at the Philadelphia Girls Rally. This project is awesome because it celebrates the vast contributions of women and because it is run by a team of totally awesome women and girl volunteers.
