Hen Institute is a chicken coop as a public art project, a classroom, and a community space that is sponsored, in part, by the City of Raleigh and the Raleigh Arts Commission to be installed at Dix Park. It is composed of a chicken coop with a built-in classroom that is inhabited by ten egg-laying chickens. Twice a month, a Raleigh chef will create a meal for the public using the eggs that will be eaten while the participants listen to a lecture, conversation, or performance by a Raleigh resident. The guest speakers will be intentionally interdisciplinary in order to engage with a wide variety of community members. Speakers could include an astronomer, a health practitioner, an artist, a novelist, a musician, a social worker, and more. Throughout the six month project, the community is invited to propose other public programs to take place on the site.
