Mural of Kalihi Valley for Fern Elementary School

This mural is a place-based project, reflecting the beautiful landscape and ancient stories of Kalihi Valley, where Fern Elementary School is located. The students of the Fern Art Club will be participating in the painting of this mural. They have been preparing with lessons on underpainting, color mixing, and brush strokes.
Fern Elementary is a Title 1 school (that receives federal funds to support low-income students and improve academic achievement) and most students come from the neighboring public housing projects. There are many good artists among them!
A lot of people on campus are helping this mural come into being - teachers, office staff, custodians, administration, and students. A team of artists/teachers and the Po'okumu (Principal) did research, made draft artworks and participated in the selection of the image to be painted. An indoor office wall has been dedicated for the mural.
A presentation ceremony is being planned upon the completion of the mural before this school year is over.
It is our hope that this will be a lasting and classic artwork, bringing pride and knowledge and delight to everyone who enters the school office. This mural was first dreamed of by Fern's Po'okumu Glen Miyasato, who was awarded Principal of the Year in 2023.

p.s. The website is for Fern Elementary School. There isn't any website for just the mural project.
