Cultural Healing at the Community Garden

The South Moorhead is a neighborhood project that brings people together through culture, food, art, and hospitality in South Moorhead. The garden is designed as a welcoming and safe space where immigrant, refugee, asylum-seeking, and longtime residents can gather without fear, build friendships, and celebrate their traditions.
Participants will grow organic vegetables, herbs, and culturally significant foods while sharing gardening knowledge from their home countries. The project also includes community meals where neighbors cook together, exchange family recipes, and experience the hospitality that is central to many cultures.
Storytelling and cultural art are at the heart of the garden. Community members will share stories of their journeys, traditions, and memories while creating art, music, and cultural displays that reflect their identities. These activities preserve cultural heritage, encourage understanding, and help neighbors learn from one another.
Led by Shana Khnano and Chalang Qadir both asylum seeker and Shan is paraprofessional supporting students with special needs, the project creates opportunities for healing, belonging, and connection. By combining gardening, cultural expression, and shared meals, the the garden strengthens neighborhood relationships, improves access to healthy food, and creates a place where everyone is welcomed, valued, and able to grow together. We have cross cultural exchange
