100 Trees Project

  1. Our Mission
Over the last 5 years the 100 Trees Project has been dedicated to restoring Gloucester’s urban canopy, one heat island at a time. Our mission is to mitigate climate change, improve air quality, and enhance the physical beauty of our city by planting and—crucially—maintaining native trees in high-need areas.

  2. Proven Success in Gloucester
We don’t just plant and walk away. To date, we have planted 75 trees in Gloucester alone and successfully transformed several pockets of the city. Last year’s grant from Awesome Gloucester and other funding sources was instrumental in:
•. Planting 27 trees in 3 different locations. Burnham Playground, John Alto Park, Lincoln Park GHA housing.
    • Engaging community volunteers for planting days.
    • The Impact: We’ve seen a measurable increase in sidewalk shade and a renewed sense of neighborhood pride in our previously "gray" corridors.

  3. The 2026 Awesome Focus: Washington Street
This year, we have secured a grant from the ECCF for 35 new trees. We are focusing 25 of these along the sidewalk along Washington Street, directly across from Addison Gilbert Hospital.
    • The Challenge: This stretch of Washington Street is a documented "Heat Island" and as an Environmental Justice (EJ) community mapped by MAPC and DCR, this area disproportionately feels the heat every summer.
    • The Timeline: The trees are purchased! We will be in the ground on April 18th.

  4. From Asphalt to Canopy: The Vision
Using AI visualization (see attached 2026 and 2036 images) , we’ve mapped the transformation of Washington Street:
    • Spring 2026: A unrelenting stretch of asphalt-heavy area.
    • Spring 2046: A lush, green corridor that lowers ambient temperatures, protects pedestrians from the sun, and provides a "green lung" for hospital patients and neighbors.
