Buford Hwy Area Little Free Library Project

For the past two years, I've dreamed of applying the proven "Little Free Library" concept (see littlefreelibrary.org) to target early readers in our English as a Second Language populations of Cross Keys.

The idea is to deploy Little Free Library units around playgrounds, schools, and apartment complexes where our low income children congregate already. The libraries would be supported by volunteers who maintain the libraries with a regular supply of age-appropriate reading materials. This would provide the kids with unlimited reading opportunities even when school is out of session.

Our team has jump-started this program with three sites so far with the support of the Atlanta Braves Foundation. We have a donated storage unit from Brookhaven Storage for warehousing books, we have lead volunteers for book drives, a home builder committed to installing all units, site stewardship volunteers, and the program is attracting a lot of attention from the community and the media for simply being effective. We've distributed over 400 books directly to children in our first month of operation.
