Cambodian Krama Project

The Cambodian krama, a traditional checkered scarf of many uses, holds complex cultural, historical, and personal significance for Cambodians cross-nationally. The krama has been a symbol of identity, community, resilience, and cultural continuity. In December 2024, the krama was added to UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
This project will highlight the cultural and historical significance of the krama through portraits of, and oral history interviews with, individuals who continue to wear the krama in Providence, RI and its neighboring cities.
As 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the Cambodian Genocide, this project not only celebrates identity and fosters relationships in Cambodian community, but also encourages the general public to engage with Cambodian history. The Cambodian Krama Project will be a visually and emotionally impactful exploration of Cambodian identity, culture and resilience.
