Sara Homan teaches sewing to a group of high school students at Star Community school which offers programming for students who need a smaller, more supportive, and more flexible school environment. They have sewing machines but need a few pairs of sewing shears, supplies like pins and seam rippers for the sewing kits, and thread and fabric for projects, She will use this micro-grant to build up a bigger supply of tools and materials so students have more opportunities for projects. Many of her students come in needing credit recovery or social emotional support. She believes learning a skill like sewing and having projects to take home and show family and friends is beneficial to the self esteem and well being of her students.
