This Island Life (Creative KI youth on ZOOM)

This Island Life: A multi-artform project reflecting the experiences of young people on Kangaroo Island from late 2019 through 2020. Centred around Parndana and the still standing school.
SAYarts were contacted by Kangaroo Island families (via Sarah Kemp) after the fires to start a project that used drama to help the kids work through the fire trauma - but in a creative way, that referenced it but didn't relive it. This face-to-face project became untenable once COVID-19 hit - needless to say, the kids were disappointed. During the school holidays we offered some free online holiday workshops that were attended by KI kids joining via ZOOM - so project This Island Life -Creative KI Kids was dreamed up: a ten week course for writers, actors, and filmmakers via zoom with award-winning youth theatre company SAYarts.
During this process the participants will work on monologues, duologues, poetry, and visual art, via zoom to create a compendium / visual diary of creative responses to their world right now. It will be about what they need to say right now. Lead by one of our award-winning team, the project will cover story-telling basics, acting fundamentals, editing and presentation tasks. Students will have a zoom showing of their work once the project is complete.
The projected start date for the project is June 2020, with an intensive workshop in the July school holidays. COVID-19 permitting, we may even have face to face workshops in July.
The Company have also teamed up with the Commissioner for Children to access data, and with Dr Mel Turner, a clinical child psychologist, to touch base on any issues of real concern that arise from this project. Dream BIG Childrens' Festival are keen to present the outcome in the 2021 Festival.
