Switch-Adapted Toys for Oahu's Title 1 Schools

Children around the world use toys as tools for self-expression, social interaction, and the development of cognitive skills, such as problem-solving and conflict resolution. Play-based learning is an essential component of child development, playing a critical role in social-emotional growth and academic readiness. Although the importance of toys is widely understood, most toys are not designed with physical disabilities in mind. As a result, many children with disabilities require switch-enabled toys, which replace the pressing, holding, or manipulation of small parts found in conventional toys with a large, easy-to-use button attached to the toy.

Switch adapted toys are not widely produced or sold, and are significantly more expensive than their mainstream counterparts. Additionally, when an adapted toy breaks, families are often forced to purchase a replacement at a high cost, as many companies lack the knowledge or resources to repair these specialized toys. We are seeking $1,000 to purchase and distribute 15 switch-adapted toys and 4 capability switches to a high-need Title 1 school in the Oahu area. We also hope to provide 1 battery device adaptor, which allows any standard battery-operated toy to be converted for switch use.

Through our project, we hope to create inclusive spaces that bring together children of all ability levels. We plan to apply to more grants offered by the Awesome Foundation to make an impact across the country.
