Summer Survival Kits for people sleeping rough in the city

Every three weeks, House of Sadaqa's Clothe the Homeless volunteers set up at Martin Place and hand out clothing, shoes, sleeping bags and essentials to between 50 and 100 people sleeping rough in the city. We have run this outreach for years, and it runs on volunteers and donated goods.

Winter gets the attention, but a Sydney summer is dangerous too. People sleeping rough have nowhere to escape the heat, no easy way to refill water, and no sun protection. Heat stress, dehydration and sunburn are real risks, and they are easy to prevent.

Our idea: 100 Summer Survival Kits, handed out at our December, January and February outreach nights. Each kit has a refillable water bottle, SPF 50+ sunscreen, a broad-brim hat, a cooling towel and a few electrolyte sachets, packed by our volunteers and given with a conversation, not just a handout.
