Peekskill Quilt for Democracy Project

This March, in Robert Hubbell’s newsletter, I saw an invitation to participate in a National “Quilt for Democracy” organized by quilters in CA, who were inspired by the “AIDS Quilt.” They are gathering our many voices to picture what democracy means. With an “arts community,” quilting groups, and diverse communities here in Peekskill, we are uniquely situated to contribute beautiful quilt squares to this visionary project. Each square of the quilt will reflect an individual voice — stories of hope, history, concern or aspiration—stitched together to form a larger whole. Rather than emphasizing division, the quilt invites connection, offering a way to channel personal beliefs, frustrations, and dreams into a collective statement.
This summer Peekskill will send 100 quilt squares to organizers in California.
In May of this year, I hosted a “kick-off” First Tuesday Salon at the BeanRunner Café. With the help of Barbara Korein, of Retake/Remake, and quilter, Jennifer Larabee, the salon was not only a place to brainstorm ideas but offered free fabric and materials with tables set up to sketch, design and create quilt squares. It was the liveliest salon in memory. Over 40 people showed up eager to participate. Our project was designed to welcome quilters and non-quilters, artists and non-artists, so one wouldn’t have to sew a stitch or have any art experience to join in.
In May & June we hosted 3 workshops to introduce image-making techniques. At SUNY WCC on Division, I offered 2 workshops allowing participants to transfer digital images to fabric. Retake/Remake also hosted a fabric paint/marker workshop in June.
Experienced quilters also got involved. The very first quilt squares were submitted by quilter Lise Prown. Quilters who meet weekly at the Field Library participated with each making squares. Jennifer Larrabee is now sewing and quilting the squares
The 100 quilt squares will be photographed and combined to become a banner for public display in Peekskill.
