"Beyond the Horizon" is a student-run, professionally printed, multilingual literary and art magazine at Kaimukī Middle School that serves as a powerful creative outlet for expression and empathy. Now preparing for our fifth annual volume, this project celebrates student voices by publishing their stories, poetry, and artwork in a full-color book that is printed and distributed to all students and staff on campus.

What makes our project truly "awesome" and unique:
- A dedicated student editorial team (grades 6-8) drives 90% of the production. They review submissions and use an empathetic feedback framework to help their peers refine their writing and art, fostering leadership and collaboration.

• To honor our diverse student body, we actively seek and publish creative pieces in students' native languages alongside English translations, promoting inclusivity and cultural pride.

• In the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines (REALM) contest, Volumes 2 and 3 earned the prestigious "First Class" rating (the highest designation), competing against middle schools, high schools, and colleges nationwide.

• We print and distribute copies of the book to our regional feeder elementary schools to inspire future students, bridge the transition to middle school, and build deep community connections.

Our goal for Volume 5 is to engage at least 95 students as editors, writers, and artists. In an increasingly digital world, holding a physical, high-quality book containing one’s own published voice is a transformative experience that builds lasting self-esteem, empathy, and belonging.
