At Ground-Up Initiative (GUI), we believe that waste is only wasted when we fail to see its value. This project aims to transform everyday food waste into nutrient-rich compost through hands-on community workshops. By engaging the public—especially youths and families—we hope to raise awareness about Singapore’s food waste challenge and empower people to take simple, actionable steps toward a more sustainable future.

Why It’s Awesome:
Singapore generates over 800,000 tonnes of food waste each year—yet much of it can be composted to enrich our soils and gardens. Our project brings this issue to life in a fun, tactile, and communal way. Participants will get their hands dirty (literally!) learning how to turn waste into life-giving compost, closing the loop from plate to planet. The compost produced will nourish our urban farm and community space, symbolizing how small actions can yield big impact.

This project will engage/benefits:
- Local families, volunteers, and students participating in workshops
- Partner organizations and cafes contributing food waste
- The broader community through demonstrations and shared compost for community gardens

Long-Term Vision:
We envision this as the start of a larger Circular Food Loop initiative—linking households, cafes, and farms in a sustainable chain of food production and waste recovery. With this seed funding, we can prototype the system, document our learnings, and inspire replication across neighborhoods.
