Heart Nest (public art mural, working title)
I'll be working with Girl Scout Troop 775 on a public benefit mural project, to simultaneously allow the girls to satisfy requirements for advanced badges and bring beauty to an area within our public sphere. We will be partnering with TDRPD to select a location and design, creating an approved site specific permanent mural on the selected Truckee Donner Parks and Recreation District property.
The themes are centered around community connection, love, and our connection to place and our shared world. We will be considering the ways we interconnect, both with one another and our environment.
I'll be structuring the project to allow the teens to unite in creative activity, with tangible and lasting participation by each individual, resulting in a beautiful and fully realized work of public art. The girls already started the brainstorming process to develop symbols and images that will be both theme and site appropriate, and will allow us to refine the design with the final site.
The timeline runs now through Spring/summer 22, and includes site approval (December), followed by design approval, materials procurement, and lastly implementation of the selected and approved mural design. This project is designed to fully include and empower all participants throughout the process, regardless of wether they consider themselves to be "artists". We will be using creatively accessible materials and techniques to allow maximum flexibility and impact for participants, while resulting in a professional quality work by which everyone, both makers and viewers, can be inspired.
Because the project is not yet designed (and will need to respond to the site selected, and approval of TDRPD) I've included some images from previous public projects, and studio work.
The jumping-off-place for the mural started with a land-sculptural piece that the girls created previously, a heart made from found objects from our wild environment, and a desire to build community beauty.
