The Poughkeepsie Community Cat Initiative

We are taking a direct, neighborhood-level approach to the community cat crisis in the City of Poughkeepsie. The city’s current free-roaming cat overpopulation can feel overwhelming for residents. We’re here to break that cycle by focusing our efforts exactly where they are needed most.

Our project works in two ways:

  1. Focused TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return): At the heart of all we do is our Focused TNR program. We believe every community cat deserves a stable, healthy life, and every neighborhood deserves a peaceful environment. We work side-by-side with City residents in "hot spots," humanely trapping, sterilizing, and returning cats to their outdoor homes; providing immediate stabilization to local colonies.
  2. The Pet Parent Bridge: Our work doesn't stop at peoples’ doorstep. While we’re out fixing community cats, we meet neighbors whose own pets go in and out, unintentionally adding to the local overpopulation. We created this "Bridge" to close that loop. If a neighbor wants to fix their pet but can’t afford the cost or doesn't have a ride, we provide the fully funded voucher for spay/neuter and rabies vaccine, and transport. It’s our way of supporting the people who care for our city’s cats, whether they live on a porch or a sofa.

The $1,000 Impact:

We don't have a "startup" cost; we have a "surgery" cost. We can fix one cat for $50. That means an Awesome Grant doesn't go toward posters or payroll—it goes to 20 surgeries. That is 20 lives improved and thousands of future homeless kittens prevented in our city alleys and backyards.

This awesome project replaces a "loud" problem with a compassionate solution. Overpopulation causes real friction between neighbors and real suffering for animals. By removing the financial barrier for city residents and managing outdoor colonies, we’re making Poughkeepsie a more harmonious place to live. We aren't just "fixing cats"—we are showing up for our neighbors and building a more humane city, one surgery at a time.
