The Sea Lemon

We are a small art-centered newspaper called "The Sea Lemon", founded to connect the community of tallship sailors around the world through the common medium of an "illuminated manuscript" zine. Similar to medieval monastic traditions, but in the modern age, traditonally rigged sailing vessels have become a haven for young thriving queer and artistic communities to connect offline.

Aboard these vessels, all the important things one must know are transmitted orally, from person to person. Sailors teach eachother such slow-earned skills as how to wire splice, how to tan fish leather, how to make and repair your own clothing, how to identify a caspian vs. an elegant tern, how to mend sails by hand, how to change the oil on your generator, & how to create bamboo poke-poles to catch monkey-face prickle back eel at low tide.

We are musicians and playrights, artists and naturalists, mechanics and mendicant philosophers who abide by one principle: "Ship, Shipmate, Self"

Through the creation of a publication that celebrates this culture, we hope to strengthen these networks of vibrant creation and knowledge sharing that we hold so dear, and give a new outlet to the voices of sailors-- those who work, live, and dream by the sea.
