The mission of Kindred Parks and Recreation is to provide places and recreation opportunities for all people of the community to gather, celebrate, and engage in activities that promote health and well-being. And we have found just the way through our latest project idea— Community StoryWalks®.
StoryWalks® are a series of mobile signs designed to connect reading and learning with physical activity. This is self-paced, family-friendly activity. Signs are installed throughout the community to encourage residents of all ages to read, move and enjoy the outdoors. The original StoryWalk® project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vt., and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library to promote literacy.
We would love the opportunity to bring StoryWalks® to our community. We would create and install signs throughout the community. Each sign would highlight pages from a children’s book. Residents would begin at a location that hosts page one of the storybook and then would stroll along the path, as directed, to the sign displaying the next page(s) of the story and so on and so on. Pages would be accompanied by an activity or reading prompt.
We plan on using the installation throughout the spring, summer, and fall months partnering with our local library to highlight different texts. Creating mobile signs affords us the opportunity to create a new experience each and every time with new trails and new texts offered to our residents!
