At our Title I elementary school, our competitive dance crew trains hard but rarely has access to opportunities beyond our own walls because funding is limited. This school year we had an enrollment dip which means even less money is available for enrichment. Meanwhile, just down the road, talented middle school dancers at another Title I school are hungry for real teaching experience with little to no paid opportunities.

This grant would fund a stipend program bringing four middle school dancers which would include two alumni returning to the elementary school where their own dance journey began, to teach our competitive crew their competition choreography. Working in four-week rotations, each student would earn $25/hour which is a fair starting rate for an early-career dance educator, totaling $100 per student.

These middle schoolers were selected for their clear passion for dance, teaching, and choreography. On an island where dance opportunities and recognition are scarce, this stipend could be a first real step toward a dance career. Creating paid experience, a teaching credential to point to, and visibility within our local dance community with their names recognized for their work.

For our elementary students, having instructors just a few years older changes everything. A teacher who was recently in their shoes is a mirror of what's possible and proof that dance can be a real career path, not just a hobby. We believe this near-peer model will deepen our dancers' commitment and show them what dedication to their craft can become.

This project builds the very connections the project title promises with alumni returning to give back, two schools linked across grade levels, and a shared community stitched together through dance. Two Title I schools, four young choreographers, and a whole crew of kids watching what's possible for their future. Title 1 students need opportunities like this. This grant would have a huge ripple effect in our community.
