Light Up the Season Tree Lighting Celebration

Altgeld Gardens, a historic Chicago Housing Authority community on the city’s far South Side, is home to generations of families who have faced systemic disinvestment, limited resources, and barriers to opportunities. Many residents experience economic hardship and food insecurity, and the community has few safe, family-friendly holiday activities. Light Up the Season was created to change that; to bring joy, unity, and pride back to Altgeld during one of the most meaningful times of the year.

This annual celebration transforms the neighborhood into a bright, welcoming winter wonderland. Volunteers from across the city come together with residents to decorate 15–20 lamp posts along 130th Street and throughout the Gardens, surrounding the community’s 30-foot holiday tree. The result is a neighborhood-wide display that brings warmth and light to an area that too often goes overlooked.

Beyond the decorations, Light Up the Season offers something even more special;connection! Families gather to enjoy hot cocoa, music, and photos with Santa. Children receive free toys and warm coats, ensuring they not only feel the spirit of the holidays but also have what they need to stay safe and comfortable through winter. A festive photo backdrop invites neighbors to capture memories and celebrate their community together.

The project’s goals are simple but powerful:

Beautify Altgeld Gardens with festive lights and decorations that inspire pride and positivity.

Bring joy to local families by providing toys, coats, and refreshments at no cost.

Engage volunteers in meaningful service that fosters connection and community ownership.

Increase visibility of Altgeld Gardens through local media and social coverage that highlights the community’s resilience and unity.

With support from this microgrant, Light Up the Season will continue to grow; spreading holiday cheer, strengthening neighborhood bonds, and reminding residents that they are seen, valued, and celebrated.
