Still Seen: Art for Elders

Still Seen is a Newburyport-based monthly art outreach project bringing handmade art and human connection to isolated seniors. Each month, I will create and mail 25–35 original 4” x 4” mixed-media paper artworks to homebound elders and nursing home residents who receive few visitors.
Each piece will feature a single encouraging word — hope, love, wisdom, kindness, joy, gratitude — paired with thoughtful imagery and a removable double-sided adhesive so it can be easily displayed. Every artwork will be personally addressed to the recipient, affirming dignity and belonging: our elders are valued, respected, and still seen.

Community Need
Loneliness among elders is widespread yet often invisible. In Newburyport, many seniors—especially those in long-term care—experience profound isolation that affects both emotional and physical health.
Days and weeks can pass without visitors, phone calls, or personal mail. A small handmade artwork, received unexpectedly in the mail, can serve as a tangible reminder that someone cares. Still Seen transforms isolation into a moment of connection, warmth, and recognition. It’s a quiet act of beauty and affirmation that says: you matter, you are remembered, you are still seen.

What We’ll Do
1. Partner Outreach (i.e., Newburyport Council on Aging, Churches, Meals on Wheels)
2. These partners will help share flyers or bulletin announcements inviting isolated seniors—or their family members/caregivers—to opt in to receive monthly art.
3. Opt-In Process:
Interested seniors or caregivers text the senior’s name and mailing address to Liz Desmarais (978-387-2749). Only basic contact info will be collected, solely for mailing the artwork.
4. Monthly Mailing:
Each month, I will create, package, and mail 25-35 small artworks to participating seniors. Every piece will include a short note and removable adhesive for safe display.
