Marine Science Field Trip to Coconut Island

My special education resource class seeks funding for an immersive marine science program at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB) on Coconut Island. This all-day experience will provide hands-on learning, beginning with a guided tour of HIMB's labs, followed by an "Invasive Algae and Invertebrate Lab" where students will analyze Gracilaria salicornia algae and its invertebrate inhabitants. Students will further explore Coconut Island's unique marine environment, observing coral reefs and participating in expert presentations tailored to their learning needs. Adaptations will ensure accessibility, with pre- and post-visit activities reinforcing the learning experience.

This program addresses the critical need for experiential STEM education among special education students. By partnering with HIMB, we aim to enhance their scientific understanding, develop inquiry skills, and foster personal growth through direct interaction with Hawaii's marine ecosystems. Funding will cover transportation, program fees, adaptive materials, and establishing a sustainable partnership with HIMB. This opportunity will not only ignite a passion for marine science but also provide lasting benefits for our students' academic and personal development.
