OnWord Skate Co. Building a Better Chicago

OnWord is designing, planning, and building a mobile DIY skatepark in Chicago during the Summer of 2021. The goal of this project is to simultaneously teach carpentry and building skills as it relates to skate ramps and equipment, and to build community among Chicago's non-traditional skaters. Our first event, titled OnSite, will take place from May 22nd to the 23rd, 2021 and we invite the skate community to come build, paint, and skate with us! We plan to host more OnSite events throughout the Summer in Chicago, when given the opportunity through available funds. OnWord will be fabricating the designs and leading the hands-on OnSite days.
Not only will these skateable and mobile sculptures enhance our city’s already vibrant skateboarding scene, it will also provide a safe environment for non-traditional skaters to learn, skate, and meet one another. In addition, these events aim to inspire participants to continue the work of constructing DIY skate
spots and sculptures within Chicago while maintaining an emphasis on community and inclusivity. We need more spaces for non-traditional skaters. Because skateboarding has strong roots in toxic masculine culture and violence, it continues to be an unsafe space for women and gender non-conforming folks. This toxicity is felt through our constant lack of acceptance and immediate labeling as “posers” in the industry. We strive to build community, non-judgmental atmospheres, and skateable safe spaces. Our mission also looks to the future, working to cultivate a new generation of diversity in
the skatepark design industry.
