Oh My Folklore

Oh My Folklore is a creative platform dedicated to preserving and reawakening the rich tapestry of local folklore within Newcastle and its surrounding areas. Our project seeks to revive a fading cultural practice: the sharing of local myths, legends, and oral histories that have long shaped community identity, collective memory, and a sense of place.

For generations, storytelling (whether rooted in truth, mystery, or collective imagination) has connected people to their landscapes, as well as to each other. Oh My Folklore aims to reignite this cultural spark by uncovering and reinterpreting stories spanning from early colonial settlement in Newcastle and its surrounds through to contemporary local lore. By drawing on archival material, community contributions, and intergenerational oral storytelling, the channel will serve as a living repository of Newcastle’s cultural narratives.

Through cinematic short-form videos and longer documentary-style pieces, these stories will be brought to life in a format that resonates with modern social media oriented audiences. Each work will be intentionally open-ended, encouraging audience participation, discussion, and the ongoing evolution of local storytelling traditions. In doing so, the project not only preserves history but actively invites the community to contribute to it.

The impact of Oh My Folklore will highlight storytelling, but also inspire locals to rediscover hidden histories, not-so-known local places, and shared 'legends'. The project will foster deeper community connection and cultural pride. It also has the potential to support regional tourism by highlighting lesser-known sites and narratives that make Newcastle unique.

Ultimately, Oh My Folklore will act as both a local archive and storytelling catalyst. We aim to honour the past while empowering a new generation to engage with, reinterpret, and continue the stories that have shaped Newcastle and Hunter communities.
