Edible Food Forest

Enrico Fermi School 17 is located in an economically disadvantaged neighborhood that suffers from food apartheid. As such, the school’s mission is to serve its students and surrounding community by providing tools to advocate for food sovereignty and justice.
This project proposes the design and planting of a small edible food forest at the front entrance of the school, which also serves as the entrance to the Orchard Family Medicine center. Staff, youth, and community volunteers would be responsible for its planting and upkeep, encouraging empowerment through food production and neighborhood beautification. Planting a variety of plants from herbs to berry shrubs and fruit trees, this project would transform the currently unutilized piece of land into a space of learning, beauty, and enjoyment open to the JOSANA community.
