Love Pamphlets

For the past couple years I've been collecting religious pamphlets - from people in the NYC subway, from extremely southern gas stations in the middle of nowhere, etc. They intrigued me with their intense language, their fairly nondescript design.

Recently, I've been creating erasure poems out of my religious pamphlet collection. In case you're not familiar, the following is the Wikipedia definition of an erasure poem: "a form of found poetry...created by erasing words from an existing text in prose or verse and framing the result on the page as a poem."

My goal is to turn the alarmist and inflammatory writing found in these religious pamphlets ("you will burn in the fiery depths of hell, heathen!") into love poetry.

These new love pamphlets would then ideally be distributed throughout Durham in public spaces in the following ways:

  • where pamphlets and flyers are commonly found - grocery stores, corner shops, etc. Poetry camouflaged in with the real estate listings, if you will.
  • "guerilla" public art installation via command strips in random locations where the pamphlets will look odd and out of place - alleys, parking lots, etc.
