Bring Your Grandma: A Community Portrait Day

Bring Your Grandma is a free public portrait event celebrating Miami’s elders and matriarchs, hosted in collaboration with the Miami Workers Center. Community members will be invited to bring their grandmothers, mothers, or elder figures to have a professional portrait taken together in a welcoming, intergenerational space. Taking place at the Workers Center—an organization dedicated to uplifting working-class women, families, and elders—the event honors the caregivers, storytellers, and neighborhood anchors whose presence often goes undocumented.

Each family will receive a printed portrait to take home, and a second copy will become part of my ongoing archive, Miami’s Elders of Resistance, which documents women leaders and activists who have shaped Miami’s social landscape. The $1,000 grant would directly fund film, printing, and setup costs to make the event accessible and free to all participants. Rooted in connection and gratitude, Bring Your Grandma is both a celebration and a living archive of the love, strength, and wisdom our elders bring to this city.
