Trans BIPOC Furries

Last year I started an online safe(r) space for Trans Black, Indigenous, People of Colour who also identify as furries. Furries are nerdy folk that identify with the furry fandom, a subculture based around a love for animals and cosplaying as original anthropomorphic characters. Often they have a strong affinity for animals, popular media and cartoons, and may have an original character called a ‘fursona’ that is an expression of oneself as an animal. Many of our members are also therians, a group of people who believe that strong parts of their identity or soul is animal. Furries and therians both have a strong kinship with animals and anthropomorphic characters.

Our first three events took place this summer in July, August, and September - casual park hangouts with art and trinket trades, zine swaps, Streetpass, Pokémon cards, and to be our authentic furry selves within a safer spaces run by us for us. We have an upcoming potluck dinner on Halloween night.

I am hoping to run 3 arts and crafts workshops this winter for our group to have in-person connection during the season of staying inside and shutting oneself indoors. This would be about once a month during the winter months between December 2026 to February 2027. Each session would provide materials and space to work in and would bring in a guest speaker to cover a different arts and crafts activity, leading participants through the beginning to end how-to of an arts project.
