Saltwater Cinema

We are creating a "Saltwater Cinema" by purchasing a portable waterproof projector and a foldable screen to host outdoor movie nights at the Ardyaloon Trochus Hatchery.

Ardyaloon is a remote Bardi Jawi community sitting right on the edge of the Sunday Straits in Northwest Australia, where we experience some of the largest tidal ranges in the world. Lives revolve around the water, but we lack social spaces where families can gather safely after dark to connect and celebrate stories.

By setting up a cinema at the Hatchery—the heart of our community’s relationship with the sea—we will transform a working aquaculture site into a magical, moonlit theatre. We plan to screen everything from locally made documentaries about Bardi Jawi sea-country to family favorites. Families will be able to sit on the beach or even watch from their dinghies anchored just offshore during high tide. It’s about bringing "awesome" to a place that is often isolated, using the backdrop of the Kimberley stars and the sound of the ocean to create a one-of-a-kind cultural experience.
