The Newburgh Community Defense Project

There’s a quote in Spanish that says, “Solo el pueblo salva al pueblo”, which translates roughly to “Only the people can save the people.” It’s a powerful call to action—a reminder that in times of crisis and systemic failure, ordinary people must rely on one another and on collective action to protect their friends, neighbors, colleagues, and classmates. Doing so effectively requires organization, training, and collaboration.

The Newburgh Community Preparedness Project is a grassroots effort, spearheaded by Newburgh Resists (Indivisible chapter), to turn that belief into action: building the skills, networks, and solidarity our community needs to keep our community safe in the face of escalating - and increasingly violent and illegal - immigration enforcement. We will do this through a series of community-based training workshops tailored to the population affected.
Based on outreach and feedback from the community, coupled with the violence and community lessons learned out of Minnesota, we are prioritizing the following workshops in February, March, and April.
- Peaceful protest methods + safety marshal/descalation training. This training will prepare our community for safe protest for No Kings + future protests, as well as prepare/empower our safety team of 30 (+) members.

  • Hands Off/ Community Preparedness Workshop - designed for Newburgh residents. Know your rights (KYR) training, Rapid Response/Community Preparedness best practices, Overview of current Newburgh Rapid Response opportunities .
  • School preparedness workshop - designed for teachers, school counselors/psychologists/social workers. Know your rights (KYR) training School preparedness best practices , Workshop / break out sessions to explore school based plans . We're currently in conversations with the school district about this offering.
  • Immigration Law for Legal Practioners. Legal training for attorneys, court advocates, and other legal practitioners.
