Silver & Savvy: Bringing AI to Our Seniors

We aim to create a series of accessible, hands-on workshops that introduce older adults to Artificial Intelligence (AI) in ways that are practical and engaging. Many seniors encounter AI daily—through smart speakers, healthcare apps, or financial tools—but often feel uncertain or left behind by rapid technological changes. Our workshops will demystify AI by focusing on real-life applications that can enhance seniors' independence, safety, health, and social connections.
Key topics will include health monitoring (using smartwatches or telehealth apps to track vital signs and medications), online safety (how AI detects scams and protects privacy), smart home devices (voice assistants and security), and AI-powered communication tools that help seniors stay connected to family and friends. We will also help participants recognize AI-generated content designed to mislead or scam them, such as deepfakes, phishing emails, or fraudulent chatbots, giving them practical tools to stay vigilant in an increasingly digital world. Each session will be interactive, hands-on, and paced to match participants’ comfort levels. We will use plain language, avoid technical jargon, and provide opportunities for participants to practice using devices directly in a supportive, low-pressure environment.
The grant will allow us to create a fully developed prototype of the workshop series, including curriculum, materials, and delivery methods, that we can refine based on participant feedback. Once tested, this prototype can serve as a model we replicate at additional sites, multiplying the long-term impact of this initial investment and reaching many more seniors across Centre County and beyond. Workshops will be offered at community centers, libraries, and senior living facilities, where participants already feel comfortable. Over time, we aim to build a lasting learning community where seniors feel empowered to confidently engage with AI technologies in their daily lives.
