The Children’s Voice Summer Camp: Making the Music

Jamie Perez Sutta created the Children’s Voice Chorus (CVC) in 2011 with the mission to positively impact the lives of young singers of all cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds through high quality choral music education. From intergenerational singing opportunities to an unforgettable Super Bowl LIV performance, CVC unites diverse students from across Miami-Dade County through the universal language of music, teaching them not just to sing, but also to express and appreciate the difference and value in our individual voices. CVC now reaches over 100 students ages 5-18 through 5 exceptional youth choirs, an early childhood music education program, and a summer camp.

A gateway program for our year-round choral ensembles, CVC’s Summer Choral Camp introduces new students to choral singing and offers internships for older students to serve as mentors, all centered around a collaborative project where students create and produce an original song and music video. Open to students grades 3-12, camp is accessible to the entire community at a sliding cost based on family needs. For 4 weeks, students participate in daily musical activities including ensemble rehearsals, masterclasses, & songwriting sessions, along with community service field trips, team-building activities, & mentorship, all focused on enhancing students’ character development, social skills, and sense of community.

Each summer’s highlight is creating the camp music video, an innovative project unique to CVC. Students work with local Miami artists to write an original song and, guided by student mentors, rehearse, record, and film a music video that premieres during a culminating concert and livestream. This collaboration with local professional musicians, as well as their fellow singers, ignites students’ creativity, empowering them not only to find their voices, but also to realize the power of uniting them to create something truly unique to them.
