The Baltimore Tree Zine Project

I plan to illustrate and distribute a free educational zine that equips and inspires Baltimoreans to address tree canopy inequality on every city block for more climate-resilient neighborhoods. This project is born from a larger advocacy project I’ve been conducting locally the past 1.5 years building a sociology of Baltimore trees, which involved neighborhood organizing and relationship-building, street gardening, understanding folks’ tree concerns, examining structural barriers, collaboration with local nonprofits, and more. This zine is a scale up of my existing zine series educating people on the race and class politics of plants in urban forests and taking action on their blocks. Thus far, I’ve mailed out 160 zines to 17 states and four countries with additional free resources on my website. I want to design a zine specifically for Baltimore trees, urban planning and resources, because I’ve found in my quest to plant more trees on my block, that there is no one centralized resource for all this information, in a way that is accessible & engaging to local folks. It will be a 18-24 page fully illustrated zine, and will cover local resources for tree planting & maintenance, grant programs, innovative, low-maintenance and climate-resilient strategies for beautifying & protecting street tree beds drawn from my conversations with the Baltimore Social-Environmental Collaborative, Baltimore neighborhood environmental history such as redlining, the Baltimore Ecosystem Study, community association inequality, and more. This will be designed in October and distributed in November across the city.
