Sew You Wanna Sew

Sew You Wanna Sew is a program that will serve 10 Queer and Trans Asian youth through a weekly 7-week beginner workshop series on sewing clothing that will run from July 4th-August 22th, 2026 at Cecil Community Centre. The first six weeks will allow participants to complete two projects and grant them the tools and knowledge to continue experimenting with garment construction on their own. We will cover topics such as: introduction to hand sewing and machine sewing, selecting fabrics, understanding and using patterns, installing zippers, and mending/altering clothes. The end goal of the series will be for participants to have sewn a small zipper coin pouch or tote bag, and a pair of pants (style depending on the participant’s interest and skill level). Throughout this process, we aim to inspire participants to build a more self-sufficient, sustainable, gender-affirming relationship to clothing, and to unleash their creativity for self-expression. We intend to equip participants with knowledge, tools, and confidence to continue sewing and altering their own clothes. In the last week (August 22nd, 2026), the program will end with a showcase where participants will be able to share their creations and experience while socializing. They will also have the opportunity to be professionally photographed in the garments that they made during the program.
