Community Mural at Kamaile Academy PCS

I am collaborating with my friend Teatuahere Teiti-Gierlach to lead a community mural project with her 11th and 12th grade students at Native Hawaiian-focused Kamaile Academy Public Charter School in Wai'anae, O'ahu. This project will be a collaborative process with the students where they contribute to the design and will paint the mural on a wall on campus. The themes of the mural will be centered in cultural connection, community, and youth empowerment. Last Spring I did a climate change resilience mural with her students which was very successful. The students created a design showing the climate change impacts that they see in their Indigenous Pacific Islander communities and the climate-just future that they want to see, rooted in ancestral knowledge and traditional practices (see attached images). I also did a similar project with a group of Native Hawaiian students at Leeward Community College (see attached images). This new project will build upon this, and may include more themes of climate resilience if the students would like to focus on that. Overall, this project will develop students' creativity and storytelling skills, foster teamwork and community, and result in a beautiful artwork that the entire school and community can enjoy.
