To mark Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (April), genEquality is spearheading the Inclusive Safety Mural Series (ISMS), a creative community engagement program to co-create inspirational murals across the 5 boroughs. We aim for this to be not only an engaging educational opportunity for young people, but also an important conduit for social change and catalyst for the safe, inclusive society we all - students to seniors - seek to live in.
Art is a powerful tool for engaging and activating a community. Our Nudge Art is always co-created and shares a positive, active social message. We aim for our art to be interactive – e.g., people can 'stand in it' for a picture that can be shared via social media, thereby spreading the message and helping to change culture through social / virtual channels, too.
When we know better, we can do better…and then we will be better.
The ISMS is bringing together students, residents, artists, and NYC residents to co-create public art that sends a message and inspires members of the community to know, do, and be better in service of safety and well-being. The mural locations will be in a public area with high traffic and visibility in every borough of NYC.
The mural creation would be facilitated by professionals (artists, educators), but the art itself will be painted and created by students under the artist and educator supervision. We anticipate that groups of 15-25 students and community members will participate in the mural design and creation process.
Our artists all identify as BIPOC and/or LGBTQ, and include:
