Boston League of Wicked Wrestlers
One of the most interesting American made entertainment institutions - the world of Pro Wrestling - is laden with overt or latent misogyny, racism, homophobia, and transphobia, and body shaming. The Boston League of Wicked Wrestlers is an all inclusive, grassroots Sports Entertainment performance art troupe, that wishes to provide an alternative space for Women and Queer people of all kinds to develop their own unique characters. We use the universe of wrestling to tackle issues of oppression, while we are "fighting" each other. Sometimes, our matches end in us working out our differences! We teach conflict resolution, consent, and the experience of being a woman, all while providing people with a funny, smart, and over the top sketch variety show, informed by the pageantry of Pro Wrestling.
This group is one of the only places you can see fat femmes and gender non conforming people as sports entertainment characters. Our goal is to provide a safe space for performers and audience goers alike (we do three big shows a year, and perform for fundraisers and shows that are not ours about once a month), and put on a completely unique show. These shows are for the people who may have never gotten a chance to enjoy sports entertainment, because they didn't fit in with the pre-existing, problematic culture around it. We are making our own culture, our own stories, our own shows, and we aim to always punch up.
