The Hudson Valley New York Black Nurses Association (HVNYBNA), a chapter of the National Black Nurses Association, is excited to host our 1st Annual Health Fair on October 24, 2026, in Newburgh, New York.

Our goal is simple: bring health, education, prevention, and community resources directly to the people of Newburgh.

As nurses, we see firsthand how preventable and manageable health conditions can become serious when individuals lack access to early screening, health education, or resources. Our health fair will bring nurses, healthcare professionals, community organizations, and residents together in one welcoming environment where people can learn about their health, participate in screenings, receive education, and connect with resources.

The event will be free and open to the public

Newburgh is a vibrant and diverse community, but residents continue to experience health and socioeconomic challenges that can affect access to preventive healthcare and contribute to poorer health outcomes.

New York State Department of Health data demonstrate significant racial disparities throughout Orange County. For example, Black residents experience diabetes hospitalization rates of 26.7 per 10,000 residents compared with 12.8 among White residents. Asthma hospitalization rates are 12.0 per 10,000 among Black residents compared with 4.2 among White residents, and stroke hospitalization rates are 33.7 compared with 20.3 per 10,000, respectively.

The disparities extend beyond individual diseases. Approximately 62.7% of deaths among Black Orange County residents occur before age 75, compared with 41.5% among White residents. Orange County has identified the Black-to-White disparity in premature mortality as an area requiring continued attention.

Other important community health concerns include hypertension and cardiovascular disease, cancer prevention and screening, maternal and infant health, mental health, substance use, and access to preventive healthcare.
